by Andy Selters and Michael Zanger
Here finally is a comprehensive guidebook to Mt. Shasta, the crown jewel of California's mountains. Mt. Shasta, an immense mountain mass soaring to over 11,000 feet above its surroundings, has long been a mecca for mountaineers, skiers, hikers, spiritualists and people inspired by great mountains.
On 14,162-foot Mt. Shasta's lower slopes, hikers and nordic skiers find walks and tours among gothic forests and subalpine meadows, trips to finish in an hour or two or to last a week. On Shasta's upper slopes, climbers and ski mountaineers find routes from moderate to severe, many including travel on the largest glaciers in California.
For skiers, the book reveals quiet forest routes and divulges some of the little-known powder pockets. For climbers, the book describes virtually every route on the mountain, telling for each route what to look out for and helping the prospective climber decide which route he or she is ready to try.
About the authors:
Andy Selters is the author or co-author of three other books for Wilderness Press. Currently based in Washington state, he is a climbing guide and instructor for the American Alpine Institute, teaching rock climbing and alpine mountaineering. In addition to Shasta, he has led climbs and treks in Alaska, Nepal and India.
For over 30 years, Michael Zanger has lived and climbed in and around Shasta, including three years as custodian of the Sierra Club cabin on the mountain. He is owner of Shasta Mountain Guides, a mountain and outdoor guide service, and has participated in major climbs and expeditions throughout North America, Europe, the Himalaya and Africa.
"Lucid, luminous, well organized and informed. A real wise guide."
-Paul McHugh, San Francisco Chronicle
"At long last, Selters and Zanger have given hikers, climbers and skiers the key that unlocks the treasure chest that is Mt. Shasta. Buy a copy and head for the mountain."
-Nick Clinch, past President, American Alpine Club
