The West Face Route

Another of Shasta's classics, this uncrowded route is an excellent climb for new mountaineers looking for a variation to the standard climb.  Our base camp in Hidden Valley (9,400') is in a spectacular location framed by Shasta and Shastina.  This route is best May-July and provides an excellent alternative to the more popular Avalanche Gulch.

Dates:
May 9-11 (FULL), 24-26
June 13-15, 27-29
July 4-6, 11-13, 25-27
Fee: $550

Did this climb with SMG back

Did this climb with SMG back in 2001. This is a beautiful and uncrowded route, and I have been back a couple of times. The views from Hidden Valley are stunning, with great shots of Castle Crags in particular. I am amazed it is not more popular, which is great for the rest of us who want to climb without the crowds. Takes a little more to get there, but it is worth every extra step. This route is also a slight step up from the Avalance Gulch level, so if you have already done AG, do this one next!

For a first timer (age 30

For a first timer (age 30 and in decent shape with no major health issues), would you suggest doing the Avalanche Gulch or West Face route? Thinking of end of June, early July. What are the pros and cons of each? Thank you.
