Basic Mountaineering

Basic mountaineering gives an introduction to climbing on moderate angle snow, and to the use of ice axe, crampons, and self belay systems. This knowledge is useful to mountain hikers who frequently cross snowfields and high passes, and are requisite to the beginning mountaineer. If you want to take a step beyond backpacking into the realm of mountaineering, this is the course for you.

Hello Sivan, thanks for your message.  You will need clothing appropriate for the day including water resistant shell gear as we will be sliding on the snow.  Also ice axe, crampons, mountain boots, and helmet.  The equipment is available to rent from The Fifth Season (where we meet) or at Shasta Basecamp.  The cost is approximately $25 depending on how much you need.

Hi Paul, This is a one

Hi Paul,

This is a one day class instructing in the fundamentals of mountaineering.  This is not a guided summit climb.  We will use a slope near the trailhead at Bunny flat or the Old Ski Bowl to conduct the class.  Climbers are responsible to provide their own equipment which is available to rent.
